December-January 2015 – P2D9

In this issue we bring the mantra japa kramA, AvaraNa pUjA kramA, and nyAsAs of bagalAmukhi dEvatA. The bagalAmukhi ashtOttara shlOkA, hRudaya shlOkA, kavacA, and the AmnAyAs have been included for the readers benefit.

bagalAmukhI form is a unique tantric representation which instills fear, confusion, and anxiety within common folks. There are several stories related to the manifestation of this form. There are numerous procedures for the kAmya prayOgAs of the bagalAmukhI vidyA. She is also called the brahmAstra rUpiNI. It is believed that brahmA conceived this mantrA and taught it to sanakAdi rishI’s. They taught it to nAradA who became the parama upAsakA of this mantrA and even became the rishi for this mantrA. NarAdA in turn taught this mantra to a paramahamsA called sAnkhyAyanA. This rishi wrote a tantrA called sAnkhyAyana tantrA that glorifies the bagalAmukhI vidhyA and brings out all possible prayOgAs and tantric ritual procedures on this dEvatA. BagalAmukhI is also represented in atharvA vEda suktam (called bagalA suktaM) and the main purpose of this suktam is to remove any krtyAbhicArAs. This suktam is also included in this issue for the readers benefit. More information about this great mahA vidyA is provided in the article titled “Who is bagalAmukhi ?”

A few dEvatAs are used for digbandhanAs (sharabhA, shUliNi, are some examples). BagalAmukhI also has an elaborate digbandhana procedure which is typically used before prayOga kriyAs to safe guard an upAsakA. This digbandhanA procedure is also included in this issue.

As usual, we would like to caution the upAsakAs that these dEvatAs CANNOT be taken lightly and the mantrAs considered like any other mantra. As the tantras rightly caution, this path is like walking on a sword and can only be ventured into by the Grace of the GurunAthA. The upAsana karma of these dEvatAs demands strict yamA and niyamAs and also ardent faith on the Guru and the dEvatA. It is important to understand the meaning of the mantra, the physical representation of the dEvatA, and contemplation on the deeper aspects of the same. These can only be provided by the Guru and by the power of the sAdhanA.

These mantras cannot be taken lightly and readers are strongly adviced to check with their Guru’s prior to start practicing any mantra or procedure as detailed in this issue.
We thank ShrI yOgAmbA samEta AtmAnandanAthA (Shri Ramesh Kutticad) for making himself available.
